Only The Good Die Young.”

Today, John Marius and I discuss Season#4, Episode #2 of Game of Thrones!

“The Lion and The Rose

This episode is named after the GREAT darkly comical and sardonic Billy Joel song, and couldn’t be a better title for the long awaited send-off of everyone’s most hated young king…Joffrey Baratheon.

We’ve been waiting a long time for this, and the show did not disappoint. The wedding and death of one of the most hated characters in TV history was a spectacle! Dense, funny, dramatic and even a little sad and tragic.

There were other things going on in this episode, but we will always remember the brauva 20 min sequence that ended this fantastic hour of television.

Here’s what on the docket today:

1. The Dark Mirror Image of Jon Snow and Ned Stark – The Boltons…a twisted father and son

2. The Fluidity of Indentity – Theon Greyjoy has now fully become “Reek.” Identity and its flexibility are a major theme of the story…Reek represents the darkest angle of that theme

3. The Pro’s and Con’s of Testing Your Abilities – Bran Stark is discovering great powers…what is the possible cost of this?

4. The Bonds of Brotherhood – The Lannister Bros are a unique relationship in GoT. They have a healthy, loving and loyal realtionship.

5. Little Pleasures and Displeasures – The wedding extravaganza was epic and intimate all at the same time. Filled with countless cross currents of both negative and positive energy.

6. The Fall of Joffrey Baratheon – This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Joffrey finally falls…but not before taking one last victory lap of horribleness.

7. Best Scene / Line / MVP

8. A New Segment! I do my fun take on “In Living Color’s” long running skit, “Men on Film” and transpose it to this episode of GoT!

Hope you enjoyed our discussion.

It was a pretty great hour of TV!

Podcast Episode #67: “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”

the-fools-rule-the-worldI’m really glad to be back for another episode of “Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things.”

Everybody Wants To Rule The World

In today’s episode, special guest, John Marius and I discuss Season#4 Episode #1 of GoT

Two Swords

This may be the most confident season premiere yet. No more overt table setting, No more full character check-in’s. This episode dives right back into the action from last season and only covers a few of our main characters.

Every episode of this TV show has something to do with power, but this particular episode finds all of our characters either re-establishing it, chasing it, or trying to gain it in an emotional context.

On the docket today:

1. A little news and a few shout-outs

2. Power and the Dysfunctional Family

3. Power and Politics

4. Youth / Inexperience and Power

5. Power and the Pursuit of Revenge

6. Favorite Scene / Line / MVP

7. Closing Thoughts

I hope you enjoy the episode half as much as I enjoyed doing it!

It’s great to be back in the saddle….feels like old times.

Mr Blue Sky

Blue sky with cloudsI’m happy to report that the thought of getting to talk about Game of Thrones again on a regular basis makes me feel like “Mr. Blue Sky!

I was going to record a short podcast welcoming myself back….but upon further reflection, I realized two things:

1. It sounded like a pompous and douchy thing to do!

2. And….more importantly, all I really want to talk about is this GREAT HBO show that we all love.

So, instead, here is the upcoming schedule:

1. Every Sunday night / Monday morning, for the next few weeks, I will put out my thoughts on every single episode of GOT’s Season #4. I will cover one episode per podcast and try to have guests on so that I can pick their brains on the wonder that was this last season.

2. After CBB covers all 10 episodes of the last season, I will get back to those character / theme studies that I love so much. These will be shorter, but more detailed podcasts, covering:

*New Characters

*Re-examining old characters

*Comparing and contrasting pairs of characters

* Talking about how characters either support or buck the major themes of the story.

All of this will be discussed with my usual enthusiasm, irreverence and love for both the source material, as well as the TV show.

***Remember***Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things” is basically a TV show-friendly podcast.

There will no spoilers from future book material!

Having said that, I may occasionally do a book-reader’s-only podcast, but I will announce that in advance.

I will be uploading the new podcast episode by Monday morning. Hope you enjoy it!

Podcast Episode #65a: “The Circle Game”

chivalryWelcome to a new episode of “Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things

The Circle Game

In today’s Game of Thrones-centric episode, I discuss some important themes in the story:

Duty and Honor.

Valar Morghulis…..Valar Dohaeris!

Duty and honor play an ALL important role in both the story and in the character’s lives.

The very concepts seem to be changing…..but into what?

On the docket today:

1. Flying solo!

2. The “Old Guard”

3. Fracturing and transition

4. Two very different factions

5. What will honor and duty mean in the future?

With the “old guard” all but gone, where will these crucial traits go  in the future?

How will they change? Will it be for the better or the worse?

And most importantly…..how will these changes affect our characters? Their lives and their very souls seem to hang in the balance…..

Now, that’s interesting!
